Since 1978, Camphill has been providing managed shelter and support to adults with intellectual disabilities in order for them to experience a better quality of life, together with meaningful work. Every person, however complex their individual needs may be, is valued as a unique being, who takes responsibility for his or her own life. Camphill, besides offering residential care, is also a Community Farm, providing basic foodstuffs for the Community, including a variety of milk products, vegetables, herbs, eggs and meat when available.
Claudia, one of our long term residents, has spina bifida and urgently requires a new wheelchair which can accommodate her disability.
Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly. It falls under the broader category of neural tube defects. The neural tube is the embryonic structure that eventually develops into the baby’s brain and spinal cord and the tissues that enclose them.
Camphill provides various workshops to the residents. The primary purpose of the workshops is to provide meaningful employment for the residents at Camphill and it is important to note that these garden workshops become part of the resident’s identity.
Claudia is a fundi in the Poultry Garden Workshop. Besides being a brilliant gardener she is a master pesto maker and provides delicious pesto to the Community.
Presently Claudia needs a new wheelchair with solid tyres / wheels to accommodate her in the garden. Her current chair is old and outdated. Her chair does not sufficiently support her posture and the wheels are not suitable for a gardening environment based on a farm. At times she leaves her wheelchair outside the gate (entrance to the Poultry Garden) as the pathway is currently too uneven to accommodate her current wheelchair especially on wet and rainy days. This is not an ideal situation as it becomes quite traumatic and stressful for her when she is moved about without her wheelchair.
Claudia cannot express the urgency of her need and we would appreciate it if you can assist her in making her daily rhythm here at Camphill Farm Community Hermanus more comfortable.
We are claudia’s happy helpers!
